Poligny: a journey into the world of Comté cheese

Nestled at the foot of the Croix du Dan rock, the charming town of Poligny will enchant visitors with its authenticity and heritage. As the capital of Comté cheese, it invites you to discover and sample this iconic Jura cheese, whether in its many fruit orchards, dairies and fromageries, or at the Maison du Comté itself - a museum devoted to the secrets of this much-loved French fromage!

As an ancient fortified town and a Cité de Caractère (Town of Character), Poligny unveils its myriad treasures along the Circuit de la Tour. These include Saint-Hippolyte Collegiate Church, the ruins of Grimont Castle, the wine-growing districts, the Jacobins wine cellar, the courtyard of the Ursulines, and so much more.

Step off the beaten track

For a family outing near Poligny, head to the Besain karst trail. Accessible to all, provided you keep to the path, this educational trail takes you on a journey of discovery through a unique landscape of chasms, sinkholes, caves and more. Not far from Champagnole, the Lapiaz de Loulle is an impressive sloping slab of limestone rock, sculpted by natural faults and crevices.

In Arbois, immerse yourself in the world of Louis Pasteur and pay a visit to his house and laboratory. In Salins-les-Bains, discover the Grande Saline, an ancient salt production factory and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or set out on a walk around the town or up the mountain of Mont Poupet. To learn more about the history of salt, head to Arc-et-Senans to visit the Saline Royale salt factory, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are a host of other activities for you to enjoy including apple and cherry picking in the orchards of Sellières. Or why not treat yourself to a horse-drawn carriage ride pulled by the magnificent, local Comtois draught horses.
